Our training in May was wonderful, with people so ready to learn and return home to build their own personal tribe. Among our students were Janaia and Robin who make TV videos of social innovators. New Tribe Training: An Advanced Community Building Workshop with Bill Kauth & Zoe Alowan – Asheville NC, October 6-9 – Ashland, OR Dec. 1-4.
This workshop is for people longing for their own long-term, bonded community of people, we call tribe. This “new” tribe is designed to deepen love and connection in your life as well as create a safety net to navigate rapidly changing times. We will learn by doing – experiencing the ways of the tribe; the values, skills and needed structure. The non-residential model (everyone has their own home) we have developed will give you great joy and save you years of struggle attempting to learn what we have to share.
The Place: The Center for Art & Spirituality in Asheville and the Evolve Center in Ashland. Local people from will return home at night and out of town guests may stay at one of the many B&Bs, motels or with friends.
Per Person Fee: $175 for meals & rental space (four nights, five days)
Costs & Reciprocity: We offer this retreat as a gift. At the end we invite a monetary sliding scale gift contribution ($300-2100) to support ourselves and our work.
OUR INTENTION: We want every student to “feel” tribe and return home having learned exactly how to build your own. It will include how to find the people, how to invite them and then how to facilitate the “orientation and initiation” training process for bonding the tribe. Each student will learn how to hold the “joy space” of deep intimacy and create beautiful ceremonies to mark the passages into tribe.

MOST SIGNIFICANT LEARNING: After 7 years of exploring just how to build tribe, we finally found the key. Each person invited into tribe goes thru a training class we call the “tribe orientation and initiation.” It includes tribe values, structure and essential skills to function well in our tribe. These skills include safety between men and women, safe authentic intimacy and conflict resolution. You will learn all this!
INTRODUCING OUR TRIBE: We are well into our 4th year now, meeting every week. This is a photo our “tribe” in December 2015 on our third annual Solstice retreat complete with a wonderful re-commitment ceremony. There are 19 of us, we live in our own homes, we’re bonded, committed and love being with each other, at least once a week. The photo on our masthead and Communities magazine cover is from our 2013 retreat on the coast.
People often ask; What do you do in your tribe? Like family, we meet together, eat together, play together a few times per week. Last week a dozen of us helped Norm (crutches, very sore foot) and Brenda paint their new house, followed by pizza and beer, of course. The week before that nearly the whole tribe showed up to support Jack at an art opening, then spontaneously eight of us went out for a late dinner and laughed a told stories. It’s what we do, we’re family.
However, unlike most families, we meet formally every week to grow and learn together. One week our topic might be home, inner identity, mortality or joy. Each week a different person or team takes leadership to guide us into a process to play, explore a topic or expand our intimacy boundaries. We have designed our tribe as a cauldron for evolving us as secure, loving humans. A sense grows in us of just knowing we belong, like falling back safely into the arms of our tribe.

The “Time for Tribe” Training offered by Bill Kauth and Zoe Alowan, co-facilitated by Jack Wiens was an extraordinary experience. SOME OVERALL THEORY ON GROWTH IN A TRIBE:
“You can take people out of the tribe, but you can’t take tribe out of people.” We are tribal creatures – it lives in us, so lets take a look at how this archetypal quality can flow as “new” tribe.
“NEW” TRIBE is about your powerful growth as a person:
Allow us to offer a “map” (below) to give you a sense of how “new tribe” fits into the larger picture. The human evolutionary process has taken us from tribal hunter-gatherers (#1&2 below) to urban competitive (#5) creatures, with ever greater speed. Humankind is now entering a new global worldview, and our “new tribe” work is designed to make “The Leap.” The ManKind Project (MKP) and similar women’s “inner work” help guide people along an evolving path from #4 & 5 to #6. Then after some years in support-groups they somehow “leap” across that line into the “neo-tribal” (#8) possibility. See this graphic below as an evolutionary “world-view” map.
This “leap” from #6 to #7 is called the paradigm shift where everything changes because one now includes all past worldviews. Here we move beyond linear cause and effect into synchronicity, the “field” or simply the miracle. Here war ends because we can see and appreciate the human journey and all the people who struggled with their evolving process. Here we find the ability to see that cooperation simply works so much better for everyone than competition. This is the new culture coming into being.
Notice also in the map how the world-views alternate from “individual” (odd numbers) to “community” (even numbers) and we keep moving from simple to complex. Our retreat will explore the neo-tribal #8, which barely exists at this time on planet earth. We can not go back to tribal #2 or the authoritarian #4, we have become too complex to go back. Many of us grew up in the Humanistic era #6, and now we take on the challenge to build our “new tribes” #8 which includes all we have learned before, now moving into the unknown. Join us in this amazing experiment!
